Not to labor this, but, how does the above, in effect, differ from using Start-->Turn off the computer-->Standby? Does powering up from Standby put the same pressure on components as a boot?

It does it automatically, after however many minutes you specify
of no activity. How it differs in terms of stressing the
components I'm not sure.

Vista has something called Sleep, in which your current situation
(open apps, data, etc.), in fact, everything in RAM, is copied to an invisible file on the hard drive, but also kept in RAM. If you come back within a few hours, and hit a key or jiggle the mouse, everything is there in RAM, and the screen lights up and you're good to go. If you don't come back after several hours ("several" is not defined), the PC cuts all power, but that invisible file is still there, so when you hit a key, it supposedly reloads that. I say supposedly, because the second time I used Sleep, I left the laptop overnight, and it wouldn't come up the next day. I had to hit the power button (the telltales indicated both power on and battery charged) to shut down, then reboot. I have a query to Acer about this, but they'll probably refer me to Redmond.
