Many thanks, Carl - - those are the commands and functions I needed.
Apparently dt includes clrsum. Marvellous. XyWrite's marvellous
column define feature remains a miracle not yet emulated in any other
program, so far as I know. Along with the 3 footnote layers.

Command CLRSUM to clear any existing total.
Func SM adds the number under the cursor.
Func DT dumps the total at the cursor position.
Rinse and repeat.
