Carl is right (of course) about the origins of this routine. I hadn't
noticed the quirk with DEFined text, but, as I said, I rarely use DEF
except for cutting and pasting. I rarely use itals for emphasis except in
off-the-cuff jottings; one ought to be able to show emphasis by sentence
structure (quoth the copy editor). And if I'm writing a foreign word or a
book title, I know where I want the itals to begin and end.
And yes, Leslie, I had forgotten about the NAPS bug with regard to
additive modes. As I recall, it couldn't even handle itals; we had to use
underlining for itals (which I got around by tweaking my Postscript
printer driver to print underline as ital, because I HATE the look of
underlining).
Parsing XML/HTML/XHTML is a tricky matter. In my very brief
experience--experiment is more like it--it seemed that if you went by the
Standards Group spec, nothing could read it. But what I was hoping for
was a further option for exporting and importing between Xy and other
formats. Word's backward compatibility with its own older formats is
pretty skimpy (et pour cause), and sooner or later we'll find the
Hungarian filters not working.
