Portable Network Graphics, an open, extensible image format. (Not
related to Papua New Guinea, the Pawnee National Grassland, the
Professional Numismatists Guild or the "Pack 'N' Go" format.)

PNG offers some good features: fades (as JPG does but GIF doesn't) +
transparency (which GIF does by JPG doesn't) + lossless compression (as
TIFF has but JPG never had).

Would have been the format of choice for Internet web sites, had all
browsers supported it.
