I think he means _this_ way of indicating an emphasis in plain-text email.

Could someone elucidate what exactly an "email style italic"
looks like? Instead of this "[S]_" stuff? What program are you
using to get these things? Why would you get two consecutive
ones instead of balanced On-Off pairs?
