ThinkPad failure
My ThinkPad problem turned out to be corrupted software out of the box.
With IBM tech support we tried several fixes, including reformatting the
drive and reinstalling from the recovery image on the hard disk, which
turned out to be a mirror of the corrupted software in the boot partition.
So I'm returning the machine for a replacement. Tech support was excellent
and available, even during the holiday.
