Printing Pseudo-glitch

I have just run into a very odd glitch. Whenever I print from XY4.017,
whether from the command line or using the print menu, I get a "general
failure" error, after which, with no perceptible delay, the file, or the
pages, print quite happily and without errors. I have never seen this
error
message in any other connection.
I am using Windows 95, and running XY within Windows from a shortcut.
Here is my setup:
Computer Dell Dimension M200a
CPU Pentium 200
RAM 48MB
HDD Quantum Fireball ST4.3a 4.2GB
Backup Disk WD Caviar 405MB
Display Adapter S3 Virge w\2MB memory
CD-ROM Toshiba XM-6102B 16X
Modem US Robotics Sportster 56K
Comm software Netscape Communicator 4
Printer HP Laserjet 4+
Scanner HP 5pse, TextBridge Pro 98 OCR
Windows 95 OSR2
This did not happen from the outset,
but began a couple of weeks ago. Since then it inevitably happens. I
find nothing untoward in STARTUP.INT, SETTINGS.DFL, or HP4PLUS.PRN
(which has not recently been changed).
Printing the same files with XWin4.012 (with which I use the Windows
printer driver)
gives no error message or other problem.
This behavior is so odd that I suspect someone knows the answer right
off. I look forward to finding out where the problem is.
