Search and Replace Problem

Robert Holmgren notes, with respect to my TRANS.PGM, which I submitted
as an example of a multiple search-and-replace program that needed to
turn on error suppression to keep from being stopped when the first
search reached EOF:
≪I created a test file with the text that appears below. I changed
changed
the first line of your program, from:
BX (es 1)). It beeped like
a
bastard (simply because most of the strings sought weren't found),
but it did execute all CI instructions, and then ended normally with
"Converted!"
In short, I don't get your result.≫
The reason I didn't turn off the beeps with XPL is that I already turned
them off for the computer as a whole. This may have been responsible
for the difference in our results, but this is only one of many hardware
quirks in my old computer, a Gateway 486/66mhz.
I tried deleting the ES1 delta and find that the program works perfectly
with my new computer. No beeps! In other words, the problem does not
arise with this hardware. Once again, thanks to Robert.
Cheers,
