I can't get the search function to work at all. In the
"file specification field" I put, e.g., hb*.* and nothing shows
up, even though I'm in the root directory for myself as a user. Finder
shows many "hits." The documentation seems to indicate hb*.*
should work in that field. In fact *.* doesn't work, even when I'm logged
into the main hard drive on the Mac. Maybe because this is a
beta?
(but my scroll bar in Finder is gone! must need to reboot).

Harry,
Click the 'x' to clear the entry in the search field and return to
normal Finder view.
I see you haven't familiarized yourself with the virtues of OSX. If I
may suggest: google or amazon "The Missing Manual" by David Pogue;
advertized as 'the book which should have been in the box.' Very well
written, and available for pretty much every iteration of OSX (Leopard,
SnowLep, and Lion). It'll show you around the GUI and get you up to
speed on the features and keyboard shortcuts of OSX. Shucks, you might
even learn to like OSX!
Cheers,
