Re: Cannot Load Printer

Hmmm... my understanding is that Windows does its thing without
even looking to see if an attached printer has anything in the
way of memory or special characteristics. There may be info in
the driver file which lets the computer know, for example, that
printing is possible on both sides of the paper, and Windows will
use this capability-- but not by issuing the sort of commands
that MS-DOS used to give. Everything is done via software rather
than hardware. There are both advantages and disadvantages to
this kind of thing...

A salient point is that "Win-printers" in the sense of equipment
limited to use only with Windows are fairly rare. Unlike the
people who make modems, most printers manufacturers want their
gear to work with both Windows and Macs (and other machines),
so they do have the ncecessary memory and appropriate bells and
whistles to work with several operating systems, (There may or
may not be driver utilities to allow use with Linux, BeOS, and
so forth, but that's another issue. If the manufacturer doesn't
have such available, and the hardware is capable, Linux hackers
will eventually come up with drivers.)

Sounds like the Z23 must be a Win-printer. (Printer has no onboard
RAM or processing of its own.)
