Cross-ref footnotes

There has been some chat recently about cross-referenced footnotes. This
was a feature of XyWrite II+ which got me into the club back in 1984 or
so. (Lotus WordPro *still* doesn't have this feature!!!)
I have happily used cross referencing in footnotes for years without any
trouble at all, following the procedure Dorothy Day and other have
described here. BUT... with XyWin 4.012 I cannot get it to work if I
include the footnote formatting command (FMx). For example, the first
footnote might be:
≪FN1≪LBsmythe≫. Mary Smythe argued this in ... at p. 17≫
A later footnote might then say:
≪FN1. See note ≪REFSmythe≫ at 67.≫
The reference works fine unless at the beginning of the file I add
something like:
≪FM1sz=10pt≫
The numbers do not appear in the printout (or on-screen with TYPES
either). The same file will produce correct references with Xy DOS
4.017.
Does anyone else have this problem? Could someone try it and tell me
whether you get cross references?
Thanks.
Myron
