indexing puzzle update

Thanks for all your suggestions, not all of which I have been able to test
yet. But I can tell you that the version of Xy4DOS that I have is 4.011, so
that may be the problem right there. I have the correct SP at the head of
each file and no PG at the end. My test list has only two words in it. I
have also made another observation: that the files that are wrong always
follow 15 and 16, but never 17, and the first file is never wrong.
Therefore it must be something within files 15 and 16, but I have not yet
had the time to figure out what might be different in those files. There is
no formatting at the end of them. I am intrigued by the puzzle here, and I
want not only to fix it but to figure out why it happened. I imagine that
most people who are still using XyWrite are similarly inclined, which is
why I send out these further clues.
