Extremely high--Paul is right, 255 is the maximum.
Patricia, do you think you had files at 255 for a special reason? Under
DOS, such a high setting would have bought simultaneous files open at
the expense of less space for programs and data.
Recall that this was NOT Microsludge DOS but Novell 7. And that
opsys was way ahead of its time. (More accurately, it was abreast
of the time, M$ was way behind the time. Lots of systems of that
vintage had lots of RAM, but MS DOS couldn't use it except as
EMS, which was a goshawful kludge.) It included a DPM (DOS
Protected Mode) capability: it could use RAM above 640 or even 1
Mb. Up to whatever you had on the system, IIRC, and that was 4
Mb. The manual is over at the office; if I can remember I'll see
if it has anything to say about that setting.
