Thanks for the clarification. I was operating by extesnion from long-ago
(pre-PC) math course, when "mapping" worked the other way. Which likely
would have led me to other mistakes...

Which I don't do, exactly. (And which sort of seems silly, using two
cables. I can see where you might wonder why anyone would do that) What
I've got is a parallel cable and a WiFi connection to a print server which
is separately connected to the printer. If I'm within cable reach, I use
the parallel cable. (And, ultimately, I'm mostly interested in the USB
mapping for non-parallel-port printers that might be in my future)
