Fireware/1394 is so blazingly fast, so incredibly cheap (about
two bucks per Gigabyte), so bloody handy for storing really enormous (e.g.
video) files, that it is the choice du jour -- IMO.
Yeah, I've been doing that for about 6 months with great success. You can
keep the firewire drive plugged in to the system and turn the switch (the
physical switch on the enclosure) on as needed. It is hot-switchable
A firewire card and enclosure will set you back a total of $100. Then the
drives are cheap--I've seen a buck per Gig. And the micro-drives are
coming, so, soon, they will be small enough to carry around when traveling.
