Title: RE: Xywrite -- missed chanceTwo things Mike...
Personally, I would be happy with Xy just the way it is IF it could handle long filenames and bigger files (I know that for most of you the 7.4 meg limit is more than adequate, but I bump up against it fairly often).
And...if this were truly an
open source project , it would have to be approached with a "greatest good for the greatest number" attitude...otherwise, what's the point.Ideally, I'd like to see a GUI interface WITH a command line AND the ability to do everything, easily, without using the mouse. When it comes to doing those things I use Xywrite for, I don't want to HAVE to use a mouse for anything. When it comes to the computer as a whole...a mouse (or whatever your pointing device preference) is indispensable. I simply want Xy to be COMPLETELY compatible with that world.
This conversation between us is probably a good example of one of the biggest hurdles to doing anything with updating Xywrite. As a group, we're a rather "Jurassic" bunch (and I'm certainly not excluding myself)...I think the word Xynosuars has been coined here (sometimes curmudgeonosaurs might be a more accurate term). If you read between some of the lines posted in this group you'll find words that say something to the effect of, "You can have my Xywrite when you pry my cold dead fingers from the keyboard"...I'm pretty sure that was in a post somewhere here. It's a perfectly valid attitude when you consider Xywin. Even Nota Bene is far from what most of us would consider a viable evolution. Heck, except for the upgrade in XPL commands, I consider XY4 to be a rather annoying "advance" (the purity of 3 for me!).
Yet I still believe there's way to bring Xy into the 21st century without losing those elements we love so much. I can't help thinking that if "they" had consulted "us" we'd be there by now.

That means a "point-and-click" world, which isn't what
_I_ really want to deal with.
