but, as I recall, consistency within an article or book, as regards these
matters, is more important than being technically correct
That is especially so if you can spare a thought for proofreaders. At
Skadden Arps in NYC, one of the current policies of the word
processing/proofreading department, as regards one or two spaces, is to set
the document at hand in whatever style it has already been predominantly
been set in. Any text set with right hand justification (and more
particularly, when hyphenation is turned off) magnifies the problems for
proofreaders as the space is movable, and there are always troublesome
combinations around letters such as A, T, W, f, etc. that in a more
typographically advanced environment would be removed by automatic kerning.
It would be interesting to know what literary agents demand today.
