I guess I am confused by the larger problem. What is an ASCII map?
"ASCII" designates a group of 256 characters, letters, numbers,
punctuation, and characters used in drawing boxes etc. Most people use
the term for the first 128 of these. I don't see how the 256 can be used
to draw anything that resembles a map, unless you have a very stylized,
non-scale map in mind.
I have never seen a map that isn't in a graphics format. Why does an
ASCII map require a proportional font?
