Re: Development Activities (XY and databases)

A few of the thousands of readers of the XYwrite-list haven't
visited the TTG BBS, so you might be interested in the following
excerpt from their BBS ( a long-distance call to Baltimore, U.S.A)
about the TTG's specialties, and their previous history of databases.

They are more than XYwrite, Signature, and formerly NotaBene,

THE TECHNOLOGY GROUP

Founded in 1988, The Technology Group, Inc. is a computer software publisher
focusing on high performance products for productivity improvement.
Headquartered in Baltimore, MD, The Technology Group also has offices in New
York City and the Boston area.

Says Kenneth B. Frank, founder and president of The Technology Group, "We are a
dynamic company committed to providing leading edge technology to the
application of what we refer to as work processing. Our goal is to help our
customers optimize productivity with high-performance, leading-edge software
tools that support a true work group environment."

The company's flagship product, SmartWords, combines advanced document assembly
and expert system capabilities with an integrated relational database.
Designed as a work group tool, SmartWords allows businesses to create their own
intelligent documents and document packages, which are automatically assembled,
formatted and printed based upon the system's expert rules, text library and
database. The system optimizes productivity by storing and managing expertise,
reference information and commonly used language (collectively, referred to as
a knowledge base) and then making it available for transactions and work
groups, as applicable.

General Counsel, a version of SmartWords which was developed specifically for
the legal industry, is being used in law firms of all sizes, as well as in
corporate legal departments, for lending, estate planning, employee benefits,
domestic relations, leasing, real estate, municipal finance, contracts,
incorporation and many other types of transactions.

In October 1992 The Technology Group acquired the assets of two synergistic
companies, XYQUEST, Inc. and N.B. Informatics. A new XYQUEST Division was
formed to consolidate the operations of three well-known word processors
developed by these companies--XyWrite, Nota Bene and Signature--and to amplify
the potential for continued product evolution. As of June???

Introduced in October 1982 as one of the first word processors for the IBM PC,
XyWrite holds an acclaimed leadership position in the areas of speed,
performance and versatility in the high end word processing market. XyWrite
has a significant and loyal following among publishing companies and
professional writers.

Nota Bene, [since sold back to original developers for better marketing and
development work ], is based upon the XyWrite technology, focuses on the needs
of the scholarly community, including academics, journalists, librarians,
researchers, lawyers and technical and professional writers. Several
integrated modules further expand Nota Bene's capabilities. The Lingua module
transforms Nota Bene into a multilingual word processor, supporting all western
and eastern European languages as well as Russian, Greek and Hebrew. Ibid. is
a bibliographic and citation database manager, while Orbis accomplishes
indexed, full text search and retrieval.

and there is an Internet mailing list for Nota Bene, echoed to
	Netnewsgroup also.
	bit.listserv.notabene.

Various people on this list are getting both and can guide you
	further.

By the way, for DOS persons, NB has a new 4.5 version that might
prove somewhat familar and much improved.
