" Do I understand correctly: Goscript can be used under either Windows or
" plain old DOS?

DOS, Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows NT, for
LaserGo's Goscript. [ It also can be a plugin
for Netscape Navigator to read *.PS files ]
and as the "freeware" Ghostscript you can
get:
MAC, OS/2, Unix of various flavours.
There are CJK versions around too.
The Next computer handled its screen views and
printing in Postscript.
Remember, Ghostscript (which is the "freeware" name
for a Postscript interpreter; Goscript is the copyright
name for LaserGo's version) is an _interpreter_.
Your XY has to put out the code (try it and see what
the file is) which GS interprets, (read the funny English
of your Xywrite TYF output), calculates the black and white
(or colour) points (bits) and sends the codes to the
printer, be it dot-matrix, deskjet, laserjet or whatever.
Postscript printers have RAM, code in ROM and a CPU to
do it all inside those printers. There is usually a
premium on the price of a PS printer.
Ghostscript does it all in the computer for you.
