Thanks a million, Harry. I had heard of that work, of course, but never
seen it, or even so many examples. It makes one realize how unusual
English is to have a real neuter. And how do the feminists manage in
languages without one? Years ago, when I was working in house, a
co-worker somewhere acquired a similar book. Its English wasn't that bad,
but it was full of outrageous social gaffes; one I recall was the
sentence, "Mummy was an heiress." As the book was especially aimed at
those wishing to learn British English, and such a statement would have
been too, too infra dig then (1960s),...
