Mr. Holmgren:
Re: my memory problems and your willingness to help:
You wrote,
I am in US, not UK, but I am using language code page 850, as I need the
diacritics in French and German (and occasionally others).
I'm using XYdos 4.017 with the Microlytics speller [(c) 1986-92], and it is
in c:\XY4, the same directory as Editor.exe. The PATH statement, at least
the one in autoexec.bat, is in the directory c:\windows\command.
Upon checking free memory before and after launching XY4, as suggested in
Carl Distefano's exchange with Jim Eberle in issue 136 (June 15), by using
, I find that Xy is using memory as follows:
memory before launching Xy after launching
free conventional 573968 446672
free extended 15536128 0
free total 15536128 446672
free total < 1 mb 573968 446672
To recap my basic system on the same page with the foregoing, I have an H-P
Pentium 75 mHz machine with 16 mb of RAM, a small C drive crowded with all
my programs, a 2.1 gb drive D with most of my data, and another 4 megs of
data storage on E, which is actually the portion of the hard disk holding D
which my BIOS does not recognize.
Thanks for your interest, and I await any suggestions with interest and
thanks. BTW, with memory so cheap now, I picked up 32 mb the other day
(for 30 bucks) and will install it in a few days. No doubt that will ease
the problem. But I would like to understand it and work through or around
it beforehand.
