Paul, you are right.
I'm the user who confirmed the problem you described in column and tables
with XyWin. Unfortunately, my (apparently similar) problem with tables does
not disappear setting "hy=1".
"Hy"is responsible for other things. Try to set it to 5 (either embedding
it in your document or setting it as a default via command line): at the
first hypenation (or new line) XyWin crashes. I notified this problem to
TTG more than 2 years ago. Not answer at all.
