The first step of your workaround changes the default so that it and the
directory you have are the same. I dont't follow your second step (Do another
CD to restore.) Isn't the single . of the dir what you now have as the
default?

Also I don't yet understand how I have stored the path or how I can access it
to restore to the default I had. (I suppose it is only perverseness that make
me want to stay in it.) I'll keep playing and see if the light dawns.
