For my information, does XyWin create entries in the Win registry?

NO. It's a Win 3.1 app, and not merely does it not create entries in
the registry (well, a mention might get into Recent after you
accessed it, and possibly a shortcut to it does, but nothing like
the way regular 32-bit Windows apps do), it doesn't even put any of
its parts elsewhere. Everything is within the XyW directory. That's
why you can run it off a flash drive or a CD.
Then perhaps my notion of troubleshooting a botched install by using
msconfig to shut down most services is not going to work. I guess a
better question, cost notwithstanding, is: why not use NotaBene is
you want XY in a WIN GUI?
