Paul,
Yes! The BK=1 is it. BK=1 also gave me problems with Robert's UNDO.
Eventually, I went back to BK=1, because I wanted that safety more than the
convenience of UNDO. But now I'm not sure which way to go. I'll have to
monitor how often I bless having a .BAK file.
Thanks for supplying the answer.

Harry, I notice you have bk=1 in Settings.dfl -- does the problem go away
if you use bk=0?
The interaction of bk=1 and SA gave me fits when I first used Xy4 in
Dosemu, though your problem is a little different from the ones I encountered.

Carl, thanks for looking. It must be some setting (maybe in SETTINGS.DFL)
because I just decoded what I emailed the list, and I still get the same
wrong behavior.
Also the workaround of using "STore" instead of "SAve" eliminates the
problem (without) retyping the filename. And I just tried replacing the
STore with the SA/nv and the problem reappeared. Finally, I tried the
non-TAME version of Xy, and got the same problem.
Just in case you have a brainstorm, I've attached my SETTINGS.DFL. and
STARTUP.INT.
