Most of my problems have been solved with your help,
and with the help of a computer specialist whom I shall recommend
highly for those living in New York. Through him I also confirm
that some some screen and font problems cannot be solved. It
seems
they really depend on the hardware of the computer: caveat
emptor!
Other members have asked me about the specialist: he is is a
young Polish mathemetician named Matthew Markowski who works out
of his home in Brooklyn (718-389-8250). Since he learned
computers in Poland during the past decade, he is familiar with
DOS. One very helpful member of our group warned that the only
place I would find a DOS engineer in this area would be in the
the Museum of Natural History--stuffed. But Matthew is very much
alive. He will come to you in New York and offer tutelage and
software adjustment in perfect English. He does not look down his
nose at users of what others seem to consider obsolete programs.
He charges $40 an hour. Making some adjustments and installing a
couple of old DOS programs such as Word for Word took about two
hours. Establishing that I couldn't improve the font took
slightly more than two hours. Downloading various programs made
little difference. The reason is the chips used by the computer.
My six-year-old laptopToshiba Satellite 100 (Win95) still
presents a beautiful full-screen page; my new laptop Toshiba
Satellite 1800 (Win 98) is acceptable with Xywrite in a Window
but no more, and the font is impossible full screen
But the lesson I learned is that next time I buy a computer,
I am going to consult this group and, if possible, take Mr.
Markowski with me to try it out with XyWrite. As is already
obvious from comments here, different computers like different
people come with different faces and can't be fully
modified..Thank you all for your help
