48 is the key number of "B," so:
Because with the native (i.e., out-of-the-box keyboard)
definition, you only have to remember ONE key: Ctl-B makes it
bold, the next Ctrl-B turns it off. This is also the way (more or
less) other Windows apps do it, so you don't have to mentally
shift gears when changing programs.
