The only use I ever had for 1A=1 was to recover some damaged XY files
whose EOF had been misplaced through some sort of disk error and ended up
in the middle of the file. I detected the problem because the number of
bytes in the file remained the same in a directory display, but I couldn't
see part of it when I called it. I think it was Annie who told me about
this default. It allowed me to "see past" the misplaced EOF. This was at
least two years ago, but I think I deleted the bad EOF, restored the
default to 1A=0 and then saved the file. It was a nice little rescue
mission (that no doubt could have been accomplished a number of other
ways).
So that's why I called this default "useful," though I admit it is
esoteric. Like so many other features of XyWrite, you're glad to know
they exist--and a little awed by the foresight of the programmers--when
you find out about them.
Cheers,
Carlo
