-> (1) In XyDOS (version 4.015), whenever I input a mode change
-> (e.g. hitting Ctrl+I to begin italic) the beeper sounds.

We can't begin to help you if you don't _quote_ the .KBD file code
mapped to Ctrl-I! Also, as soon as the beep occurs, command
VA/NV $ER and record the error code displayed on the PRompt line.
It's a diagnostic aid.

-> (2) In XyDOS or in XyWin (version 4.12J), when I release the
-> scroll lock (i.e. finish recording keystrokes) an extra
-> function call "NI" is inserted at the cursor.

Stay away from Scroll Lock; it's more trouble than it's worth. To
record keystrokes, assign func RK to a key (it's Ctrl-K in XY4.KBD)
which use to toggle Record Keystroke mode on and off. Issue
SAVERK [filename] to save the recorded keystrokes to a file (which
will require editing). I don't remember whether there's a function
or command to clear the record-keystroke buffer. Anyone know?

Better still, learn how to embed XPL commands from the CMline. It's
no harder than embedding any other command. And, in the long run,
far less trouble than editing a mish-mash of recorded keystrokes.

-> (3) In XyWin, when I try to insert a bookmark (i.e.
-> Ctrl+Shft+B) the first thing the program does is beep ...

If you load the Jumbo U2 (if not, why not?), try FMARK. It keeps
your place without modifying the file and retains the location even
if the absolute position has changed due to editing. Keeps track of
any number of placemarkers for any number of files.

If you opt to insert a physical marker, I suggest enclosing it in a
non-printing NoTe or LaBel, so that if you forget to delete it (and
sooner or later you *will* forget), it won't disturb printing.
