Rafe - if you are using OS/2 Warp 4.0, try this.
(I don't know if this can be done in Warp 3.0)
You can create a folder on your desktop which
mirrors the contents of files on the disk space
provided for you by your internet service
provider. To do this, open your templates folder
in the "OS/2 Sytem" folder, then open
"Templates for the internet." Drag the template
"FTP Host" to your desktop or any other folder.
When the template opens up, enter your
hostname, username, and password. On the
upper right corner, click the little plus sign to go
to page 2 of the Host tab. There, you can
designate the preferred directory on your
remote host, and your preferred directory on
your local computer.
Now, all you have to do is dial into your internet
provider, and double click on the icon you just
created. You will get a folder listing all your
files on the remote computer. To save files
there, simply open the folder containing your
local files (via the drives icon, or by creating a
shadow somewhere which points to your data
directory.) Then you can drag and drop files
back and forth between the remote computer
and your local computer. OS/2 takes care of all
the FTP stuff transparently.
For example, at home I created a folder in this
manner called "Stuff on my D: Drive at work"
which mirrors the contents of my D: drive at the
office. I can drag any file from there onto the
XyWrite icon, and open it for editing. I don't
know how to save via the XyWrite command
line to the remote computer; however, if you
save the file on your local computer and then
drag it to the folder representing the remote
computer, you can achieve the results you
want.
Hope this helps!

Is this possible -- I'm asking for OS/2, but
perhaps it applies
elsewhere:
As I work on something in Xywrite on my
desktop, I wish to backup to
disk space on my dialup Internet server, for
whatever reason. Is
there any workaround which would allow me to
use the DOS subst
command or something like it to designate my
directory on the server,
then use Xywrite's x:,y: command to use it as
the backup drive?
Seems doubtful, I'd think, if only because I don't
know of any file
commands that are translatable across Warp
tcip/ip connections; that
is, a command-line instruction like COPY -- I
guess if I invoke
command-line FTP, I can use PUT with the
proper parameters (don't
know them, since I use gui ftp usually). Which
I suppose means that
I'd first save the file, and then use the
DiStefano-Holmgren Xy-os/2
shell to launch an OS/2 batch file which would
take the name of the
file just saved and use it for the file transfer.
Which is kind of beyond my ken, mostly
because I wouldn't know how to
get "Xy-OS/2" to read the filename and insert it
via % parameters
into the OS/2 batch file...
Carl, Robert? Any ideas?
