I used to do this thing in last minute eBay bidding, where I'd have 3 tabs
going for the same auction, with different, escalated bids ready for rapid
dispatch if needed. In that last 30 seconds, a second or two
matters. You don't want to turn your cards face up until you have to, and
no point ceding other bidders an advantage. But that's only 3 tabs, out
of maybe 8 or 9. More tabs open than that,
Don't you use Snark, or whatever that automated bidding program is called?
and you can't even tell what's there at top of screen. In any case,
eBay greatly improved their auction countdown / re-bid screens, to the
point where that old maneuver is rarely of value any longer.
It's not just bookmarks that can help keep track of things. The FireFox
auto-complete when typing in the address bar often saves me from even
having to summon the Bookmarks Manager. A distinctive, remembered phrase
can invoke the item and URL that I wanted.
Some of you may not realize that modern browsers, like Chrome, allow you to
treat the URL field like a Google field. E.g., type into Chrome's URL field

What's the advantage of having 44 tabs open versus, say, seven or eight
that you're actually using, and closing/reopening the others when you
actually look at them?
