That sounds bizarre. Even if they have never heard of XYwrite, they can
open a XY file easily from Word as a text file. What did they say happened
when they opened a XY file?

You can just remove the guillemots and what you have is a clean DOS text
file. There is no excuse for any word processor not to open that.
