os/2 information

Just in case the below is of general interest.

Below is my xy4.bat file; I created a program object that uses that as its
autoexec.bat and editor.exe as its program. Make sure that your drive
assignments are what you think they are. There is nothing particularly
interesting about the bat file and much of it wouldn't apply to you. Below I
will also append the dos settings from my xy program object.

PROMPT $i$p$g rem LOADHIGH c:\os2\mdos\APPEND C:\OS2;C:\OS2\SYSTEM
SET TMP=C:\ d:
PATH d:\XY4;d:\XY4\SPL;c:\OS2\MDOS;d:\UTIL;c:\OS2;c:\;d:\uv;d:\nu
e:\DISP_1\CLMODE m6+ loadhigh d:\uv\uv/r d:\uv\uv/L loadhigh d:\uv\uvcolors
all/r d:\uv\ul under d:\uv\uv on uvcolors inverse
D: uv 94x36
CD \XY4

Here is the printer portion of my settings.dfl. Line two is the relevant one
for faxworks. When you want to send a fax from xywrite, just do a "setp 2" and
a simple "ty"

PP:5
LPT1.OS2 d:\xy4\hp4dda.prn Hewlett Packard Laserjet 4
LPT3.OS2 d:\XY4\IBM-X24.PRN FAX Output
LPT1 d:\XY4\ASCII.PRN For electronic mail
LPT1 d:\xy4\stripd.prn for electronic mail with markup codes
LPT1 d:\xy4\indy.prn for indy

Below is what one gets if you select the "print" button on the dos settings
page and then tell it to print to a file; it calls this an encoded file. You
can sort of glean the relevant info from it. If I remember correctly I left
everything alone (though I had already changed in the global config.sys the
silly defaults about dos high and umb. That is I set dos=high, umb in the
config.sys and that default is reflected in the default dos settings. Since
I don't use dos communication programs at all, much less from xywrite I turned
of com access for xywrite's dos sessions. You'll want to leave background
execution on, pretty leave everything else alone. You want to make sure that
ctrl-esc doesn't do anything interesting within XyWrite.
Since my xykbd makes the left and right ctrl keys different shifters this
wasn't a big problem for my as long as I remember to use the right ctrl-esc as
my to-the-desktop stroke.

Let me know what else I can tell you. I have found OS/2 useful and I am not a
big fan of fiddling for hours; I certainly remember having more frustrating
times fiddling with dos memory managers and crashes than I've ever had tuning
os/2. By the way, do you have this in your settings.dfl?:
