I checked my email on my former NTVDM problems and I see they related to
launching Tame with Xy from a batch file, and the problem just went away by
itself.
Grasping at straws, you could try remming out that line in autoexec.nt and
launching Xy from a short cut that launches a batch (.BAT) file that
invokes Tame and then Xy.

Mine (which I no longer use) is these two lines:
C:\PROGRA~1\Tame5~1.1\Tame-nt.com
C:\xy\Editor.exe /e4000

But this probably won't solve it.
 I tried placing EDITOR.EXE.TAM in the XY4 directory. That did
 not work, so I brought it back to the settings directory, under
 Program files\tame 5.1\, and that too does not help. The answer
 to your question about CMD or KMD is "yes," and the last line
 of autoexec.nt is exactly as you state.
