I've had to do the same thing, and I think there are three ways to go.
First requires an older version of Word (like Word 95) on your computer
AND a set of the Adobe WFW translation files. I keep both on my computer
just for problems like this. If you have those files, you can ask Word
to call up the Xy4 files, and translate them into Word. Or you can
simply have WFW do the translation by itself.
Second: Save your Xy4 files in RFT, and use Word -- any version -- to
translate them from RFT into Word.
Third: call up your Xy4 files, and save them in another program that
Word recognizes -- like earlier versions of Word for Windows, or perhaps
even Word for DOS, or perhaps Word Perfect, and then have Word do the
translation.
I don't know what kind of a book you're sending in. Mine was
complicated, having lots and lots of footnotes, various kinds of
formatting commands, some of which survived intact, some of which
didn't. You may have to experiment with several versions of what I've
listed above -- for instance, you may find that in one system all the
italicizations or other font changes have been lost. I've found that RFT
works the best, but you may have a different result.
