One way of perhaps minimizing this is to create a fontproof: Type all the
letters, upper- and lowercase, common punctuation marks, and any accented
letters and other high-number symbos (em and en dashes, ellipsis, smart
quotes, etc) that you regularly use, copy them several times, then spec
each set for a different font and print it out. Keep this cheat sheet
handy, and you'll know what each font looks like and also if any of them
don't support some character you need. Hope this helps.
