"The big green door..." is a matter of convention, and you'd need to have
recourse to scholarly work on English syntax (by linguists like Chomsky or
Algeo, rather than stylists like Fowler or Bernstein) to get an answer as
to whether some "rules" underlying that convention have been deduced. (I
bet they have.) If your mother's book is intended for native speakers,
she might do best to omit the matter. For someone learning English as a
second language, finding an answer could be very important.
