Robert, the limited kerning feature is not yet implemented. We are considering
it in our next revision. This feature is simply an XPL routine which will
output a PC code at the point of insertion (let's say between the X and y of
"XyWrite") which sends negative movement code to the printer (HP only). So, to
call it a "kerning" feature might be a bit misleading. However, for writer's
looking to produce a good looking headline and have an HP printer, it's not so
bad. The interface for the negative movement increment has not yet been
decided. We may just offer a specific number of savegets which contain a
variety of negative movement code. This is something that you can do right now
if you wish. I'm sure that you gahered that in my last sentence. The only
drawback to this technique is that justification is not possible.
You can, by the way, shell out to DOS from the XyWrite for Windows command
line, just as we always have in III Plus.
I understand you sentiments with respect to the development of III Plus. You
are correct in your assessment of the termination of it's development.
Concerning XY4, I do not know what our intention is with respect to further
development. We continue to provide bug-fix updates, and we are considering a
feature upgrade which will contain some of the feature I mentioned in my
previous message to you. This would most likely be a charged for upgrade, but
not anything like III + to XY4. This has not been decided.
The Orbis problem I mentioned is being worked on at this time. When the fix is
available, it will not inhibit the speed of XY4 at all. We know what the
problem is and intend to resolve it. It is from my understanding a somewhat
complex problem, but one we can resolve. Again, I will post notice here when it
is fixed. I agree with your comments about the promotion of Orbis and can only
offer an apology. This program was designed by a programmer no longer with our
organization. The programmer attending to it's problems must investigate the
code before making modifications. This is unfortunate, but we want to ensure
that the next revision is solid.
If you purchase the XyWrite for Windows upgrade, I hope you enjoy using the
product. I have posted a file DIALOG.XY4 here on the board for power users to
examine. This file provides the programmer's notes, etc., concerning the
workings of the dialog file contained in the program. We have had to
incorporate our dialog box coordinates in units for Windows called dialog-box
units. I guess it relates to the screen diffs between DOS and Windows.
