Jon,
Notebooks on battery power often put things to sleep to conserve battery
power, such as the hardisk and the network card. The standby settings
often let you configure these things manually though. I advise checking
the hardisk time-out when on battery power and if necessary either
lengthening the time-out or selecting the option 'never' for hardisk
time-out. See if that helps.
