Thanks to Harry Binswanger for additional suggestions.

I have now solved the problem in a somewhat roundabout way: On the
machine where I run Xy4DOS, I have assigned LPT1 to be redirected to a
network printer on another computer, and that network printer actually
is set up to be the Brother on the print server (because direct
reassignment to the print server didn't work). Xy doesn't complain and
prints happily without any adjustments to the settings file. The only
downside of this is that the other computer also needs to be on whenever
I want to print from Xy4DOS to the Brother (thereby somewhat defeating
the original purpose of having a stand-alone print server on the network),
but that is a bearable drawback.
