This is fascinating. I've always been trying to figure out how the Eudora
mailboxes work, although my curiosity has been moderated by my fear of
bombing the program that I depend on for my work.
Just backup your .mbx and .toc files to another drive, then you won't have
to worry. I mean, you can't change the program itself by fiddling with
mailboxes anymore than you could change editor.exe by putting strange
characters in files.
The only problem I have with your system is that I can't get the From
???@??? trick to work. When I insert it between messages, even preceded by
2 carrier returns, I just get 1 big message.
Aha, doesn't separate them in Eudora 3, but does in Eudora 4. Another
reason to use 4 (tried Eudora 5, didn't like it).
Furthermore, when I move
messages from one mailbox to the other, Eudora seems to insert end-of-file
characters between each message, which makes them unreadable by XyWrite.
Not unreadable--see my addendum message, sent earlier today.
But other mailboxes don't have EOF characters between messages.
Has to do, I believe, with whether they have been "compacted" or not.
"Compacting" puts the individual messages in sequential order, with the EOF
character at the physical end.
