Of general interest re swap files slowing down your system:
You can use System Monitor to see how much swap file is actually in use. In Win95 and Win98, you can find System Monitor under:

Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Monitor.
If System Monitor isn't there, you can get it off your Win CD by using Add/Remove Programs. It's under System Tools (not Accessories).
After you launch it, go to the Edit drop-down menu, and Add Item, then
Memory Manager, then Swapfile in use. I also set the time-check to
one-second intervals by going to Options, Chart, and then sliding the
slider all the way left.
System Monitor lets you look at a look of interesting things, like Kernel
Processor Usage.
