I agree that that's the solution for home, but the locations of the
serious work I have been trying to do have been airplanes, hotel rooms,
airports, ...

Get yourself an external keyboard. And an external monitor. The laptop
is only for the innards. (I assume you're doing the serious work at home
or in your office, not while on the road.)
