Georges Condominas We have eaten the forest,
translated from the original
French, Nous avons mange l'foret (or some
such). It is a brilliant ethnography
of a
highland Montagnard community in Vietnam. The title
reflects the people's
belated realization that in chopping down most of the
forest in which they lived,
they had destroyed the environment upon which their
culture depended. The book,
written about 40 years ago, is now out of
print, but Powell's (www.powells.com)
has lots of copies.
