Re: Win 7, after January ?

Jordan,

The current OS market share situation is as follows:
Windows 10 over 50%
Windows 7 over 25%
Different Mac OS X versions (10.15 - 10.12) over 10%
Windows 8 (8 & 8.1) nearly 4%
Linux over 2%
Chrome nearly 0.5%
There certainly will be Windows 7 users after end-of-support. The danger of using Windows 7 depends on how you use your computer. If you are a conservative and cautious user, the danger may be quite small. However, if you visit dangerous sites of dubitable nature very frequently, you may be at risk. One way of making the situation better is to use virtual machines for browsing in "the danger zone".

This is how you can add a browser appliance to your Win7 setup:

1) install VirtualBox or VMware
2) download a Centos 7 (64-bit) browser appliance from: http://browser.shell.tor.hu/

3) install multimedia in it, see:
https://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/MultimediaOnCentOS7
(steps 1,2,3)
4) create a normal user in Centos, change the password of 'root', update the Firefox browser to current version (71 today). (This is not a daunting task in Linux, just open Firefox, go to "about Mozilla Firefox", and the update starts automatically).

5) make a snapshot in the virtual machine manager (VirtualBox or VMware)

6) do not use the setup for browsing until you have completed the setup

7) when done, use normally for browsing
8) after each session, close "power off the machine" with "restore current snapshot" ticked (these are the VirtualBox options). This means that all changes/viruses etc. are wiped off, and the machine returns to pristine state for the next session. (When there is a need to update the configuration, open the snapshot, update the system, and take another snapshot).
