Dear CarlI have managed to get the colours I want, finally. I found a ConEmu colour scheme called tc-maxx (I think that is the one, I am loath to reset it and lose what I have gained) which was blue text on a black background. I then changed the colour that was being used for the text to the green I wanted, and it seems to have stuck. I don't quite understand how Aspell interacts with the ConEmu colour settings. I think it wants to force default white on black but some of the ConEmu colour schemes fool it by changing those defaults (in the registry?) to different colours. It will probably be possible to get other colour combinations by tweaking selected appropriate ConEmu colour schemes.
A minor victory, anyway. You're right, Paul. I was focusing on background colors, but Aspell does always force white for the text. I can't see a way around it. Grrr, indeed.
