Well, for the record, Carl's recommended config settings did cure the lag.  Moving through long documents is at least as snappy as it is with vdosplus.

I would regard vDosPlus XyWrite as a mature solution, and DOSBox-X as a
work in progress. I am quite happy with the speed of vDosPlus XyWrite
and I have been rather busy doing other things, so I have not felt an
urgent need to test DOSBox-X. Given time and effort, it may become a
serious contender.
