Bob Maybe this will help.I customised the XY4 keyboard for my Afrikaans colleagues when our department used XyWrite in the 1990s. Under Function Calls in the manual, S1 to S7 create Foreign/Overstrike Characters (See Note #5):
S1 = Accute accent S2 = Grave accent S3 = Umlaut S4 = Circumflex S5 = O accent S6 = Tilde S7 = Underline NOTE #5S1 - S7 The letter S followed by a number between 1 and 7 is used for entering foreign accented characters. When you use one of these calls, the indicated accent mark appears on the screen (at this stage, the accent mark may not display correctly). If the letter that is next pressed is a letter that accepts accents (for example, a, A, e, E, i, o, O, u, U, y, n and N) the accent mark is replaced that letter with the accent applied.
For example I allocated the accent keys to: TABLE=CTRL ;40=' ;41=` 40=S1 41=S2 TABLE=CTRL+SHIFT 40=S3 TABLE=SHIFT ;7=^ 7=S4 Regards Jon Inggs On 31-May-21 3:05 AM, FreeLists Mailing List Manager wrote:

I've been writing a novel in French (with a US keyboard) and doing the accents is making this a frustrating experience on stock XY4. I'm using the supplied method of Insert menu - Accent - (select accent). For one thing the selection is incomplete (no cédille), but overwhelmingly, it's just so slow. I would think there is some sort of startup code I could add to make this work, probably something that already exists. If someone could point me in the right direction I'd be very appreciative. Mahalo in advance,
