Edward,
I totally disagree. Ansification, while possible, is totally
nonstandard. If the host system is Windows, CP437 accented characters
work ok as long as you export using RTF or read the XY file as DOS CP437
using any compatible application like the free EditPad Lite where you
can set up .XY (or .TXB) file type with DOS 437 encoding (Options,
Configure File Types, Encoding tab). EditPad then reads correctly the Xy
file as CP437 and makes it possible to copy its contents to other
formats using Windows clipboard.
My point is to use only the 8-bit ASCII character set, and not the
extended Bitstream character set. All Western accented characters are
present in the CP437 character set. E.g. chr 132 is a umlaut (ä), but
there is also chr 786 which is a umlaut. Just ignore any character
beyond 255. Now then, the important thing is to provide an input method
for CP437, but I think all Xy users who are in this situation know how
to do it by just adding the characters or dead accents to one's keyboard.
Best regards,
Kari Eveli

If I want to create a Xy4 setup that can be used today by someone who needs accented characters, then ANSIfied XyWrite is
essential. Ordinary XyWrite simply won’t work because it can’t share accented characters with anything else.
